Webcap Mushrooms (Cortinarius) in New Brunswick The New Brunswick Museum, with funding from the NB Wildlife Trust Fund, is studying the diversity of webcap mushrooms (Cortinariusin the broad sense)in New Brunswick. This is a first step towards having a better idea about how many species we have in NB, and what are their distributions, ecologies and population trends. Cortinarius is one of the most diverse genera of mushrooms, with 3,000 species worldwide, and an estimated 300 to 400 species occurring in New Brunswick. The Botany & Mycology team will be conducting weekly fieldwork to obtain new collections of webcaps for the NBM herbarium, and we also encourage participation from naturalists across the province. You can add your collections to the project by:
Photographing the mushrooms in the field
Recording all relevant information (Locality; What tree species were present around the mushrooms)
Collecting and preserving the mushrooms using a food dehydrator (3-5 individual mushrooms per site would be enough)
Sending the collection the New Brunswick Museum (NBM-Botany & Mycology, 277 Douglas Avenue, Saint John, E2K 1E5)
