Chanterelles and Hedgehog Mushrooms in New Brunswick The New Brunswick Museum, with funding from the NB Wildlife Trust Fund, dedicated the 2021 mycological season to the study of chanterelles (Cantharellus and Craterellus) and hedgehog mushrooms (Hydnum) in New Brunswick. This was a first step towards having a better idea about how many species we have in NB, and what are their distributions, ecologies and population trends.
The Botany & Mycology team at NBM conducted fieldwork through Southern NB this mycological season, with additional collections from the general public. A total of 277 collections (86 Cantharellus, 29 Craterellus and 162 Hydnum) were obtained during this 1-year project.
The collections already identified have been added to the iNaturalist project page:
On February 2023 I gave a talk about to the Saint John Naturalists Club about the diversity of Hydnum & chanterelles in New Brunswick. You can watch it here: https://youtu.be/BrNWb7Pg4Gw
As a result of this research we published a new species of Hydnum from New Brunswick: Hydnum atlanticum
